In the last decade, several Zombie films have been released as the Zombie film genre explodes in popularity. From Zombies making fun of the way Humans portray them, to Humans using the films as sources for survival tips (not highly recommended, but highly entertaining), these movies utilize different sub-genres to tell entertaining stories, from comedy to romance.
If you’re struggling to pick a Zombie flick for your movie night this spooky season, here are my top 5 recommendations!
If You Want A RomCom…
Look no further than Warm Bodies (2013), a retelling of Romeo (Zombeo?) and Juliet from the perspective of a young Zombie and the girl he saves from near death. The jokes are solid, the romance is fun and perfectly cheesy, and the film explores zombiehood in a fun and fresh way.
If You Want A Long-Awaited Sequel…
Look no further than Zombieland: Double Tap (2019), the sequel to ZomCom hit Zombieland (2009). After a 10-year wait, this sequel hit theaters to rave reviews from loyal (and hungry) fans, and the fantastic ensemble cast adds many feel-good moments to this film’s post-apocalyptic setting.
If You Want Something More Dystopian…
Look no further than The Girl with All the Gifts (2016), the story of Zombie child Melanie and her journey outside of the government-created facility where she grew up in an effort to find the Zombie cure. This film has many genuine moments of social commentary and really places the viewer in the brain of a Zombie in a world that’s not made for them.
If You Want Something Heartfelt…
Look no further than Little Monsters (2019), a thrilling yet adorable film following a music teacher and her class of young students in the midst of a Zombie outbreak while on a class trip. This movie has everything: humor, horror, and Lupita Nyong’o. If you haven’t seen this one, you’re missing out!
If You Want Something More Dramatic…
Look no further than the critically acclaimed thriller Train to Busan (2013), the South Korean hit film so fantastic that it made its way to the States and took Zombie fans by storm. The film follows several characters on a, you guessed it, train to Busan, as they fight to survive a sudden Zombie outbreak. This movie is a classic thriller, filled with talented performances, suspense, and drama.
Enjoy your films scotties!
